Abstract: The Controller Area Network (CAN) is constructed in real-time control applications for small aircrafts to enhance into higher performance. Normally, the correct operation of the CAN communication protocol relies on an assumption that each node in the network is identified uniquely. However, CAN is not efficient and reliable to identify those nodes being connected to the network without an associated identifier. Under such configuration, each device has to be identified and connected manually. In this paper, a new automatic node discovery technology is presented to eliminate such drawbacks in small CAN system applications. Through the communication services of the application layer, the parameters are adjusted inside the network so that the arbitration identification of each node can be correctly configured to achieve the interoperability and interchangeability of the node design. The CAN is designed for small aircraft avionics with aviation reliability standards.
