Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of welding parameters on the magnitude of residual stress and metallurgical properties produced by parallel heat welding (PHW) by using autogenous gas tungsten arc welding on type 304 stainless steel. During such welding, the thermal cycles of four locations in the weldment were recorded to investigate the action of thermal stress. The metallurgical properties were examined by using the optical microscope and Vickers hardness tester. Based on the setup of heating torches behind the welding torch during PHW, it was found that the residual stress increases with the increase of heating temperature and width of heating torches. The PHW process does not increase the width of the heat affected zone (HAZ) nor the tendency of grain coarsening. The width of the HAZ and the hardness distribution are not significantly changed from various heating conditions in type 304 stainless steel weldment.
