Abstract: This study employs commercial rigid-plastic finite element (FE) DEFORMTM 2D software to investigate the plastic deformation behavior of porous billets during their high extrusion-ratio axisymmetric hydrostatic extrusion through conical dies. The FE analyses assume the container, ram, and die to be rigid bodies and ignore the deformation-induced temperature rise which occurs within the billet during the extrusion process. The numerical analyses investigate the respective effects of the semi-angle of the conical die, the initial density of the porous billet, the extrusion ratio, and the initial diameter of the billet on the damage, effective strain, effective stress, and radial load induced within the extruded billet. The simulation results confirm the suitability of the DEFORMTM 2D software for modeling the high extrusion-ratio hydrostatic extrusion of porous billets.
