Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the effects of implementing the instructional module of multiplicative identities in context of life situation around students. The alternative teaching material was developed by authors using developmental research. An 8th grade class was as the experimental group and implementing the module of multiplicative identities by using the problem centered with double cycles (PCDC) instructional model. The other 8th grade eleven classes as the control group implementing the textbook, using geometric representation demonstrating the identity by traditional teaching. Data collection included observations, interviews, questionnaires, the Need for Cognition Scale, journals, and tests. Data analyses included both qualitative and quantitative. The findings indicated that the experimental group was much better than anyone class of the control group in cognition such as mathematics achievements and symbol manipulation or higher order thinking, and in affective such as the tendency to engage in and enjoy thinking measured by the Need for Cognition Scale (t-test, p < 0.001).
