This paper is written to analyze the consciousness of lijie歷劫, meaning “calamity,” in Journey to the West西遊記 and Dream of the Red Chamber紅樓夢, two classical full-length novels from the late imperial era. This paper is divided into three main parts: (1) the inter-connectivity of narrative consciousness and plot structure in the two novels, (2) the emphasis on pre-determined fate and the path toward enlightenment, and (3) the corresponding balance between self-cultivation and reality. According to this study, it can be seen that the novels’ authors’ personal values and consciousness dominate the artistic forms and inherent meaning in their works.
