Enhancement Program of Physics Learning for Senior High Gifted Students (II)

The purpose of this three-year project is aiming to provide an environment for gifted senior high school students for pursuing excellent science achievement and creative capability. The goal will be completed by using group teaching, small group discussion, hands-on laboratory, and special topics of research activity. All of the activities are structured in a systematic way, in which the program for first year, second year, and the third year of high school students are planed and focused in different approaches. In the first year, thirty gifted senior high school students in central Taiwan were selected in an open way through written and oral evaluation; the training content was based on covering all of the high school physics. In the second year, another thirty students were selected in a process and trained in the similar way as the first year, while the original thirty students selected and passed from the previous year were trained using content of calculus-based general physics for freshmen. Finally, for
those students in their third year of training, special topic of research activities will be focused. The understanding of the nature of science as well as the problem solving ability were indicated by means of quantitative and qualitative data. It is hoped and believed that this project can provide an excellent way and role model not only promoting and developing the better relation between university and local high schools, but also facilitate the process in promoting the gifted students at all levels. Hopefully, several future outstanding scientists could be found from this program.
