The aim of this study is to explore the development of language education In Taiwan under the Japanse administration. During its 50 years rule, the Japanese constructed a sound system of colonial education, which included three major tactics: (1) The policy of no principles, (2) The policy of differentiation and assimilation, and (3) National language policy.
In the early stages of its rule, the Japanese implemented the “language assimilation policy“, teaching both Japanese and Taiwanese languages in the education system. They established an education model in which “the Japanese learn Taiwanese , and the Taiwanese learn Japanese ', setting the precedent of bilingual education in Taiwan education history. With the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war later, they took strict measures to suppress Taiwan languages, trying to cut off the cultural linkage between Taiwan and China.
By comparing the Taiwanese language education during the colonial period with that of Korea ruled by Japan in the same period and KMT government’s policies, I hope to provide useful reference to the authorities to assist them in making language policy in the future.
