The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among personality traits, life-management strategies of selection, optimization, and compensation (abbreviated in SOC life-management strategies), and well-being of students in high schools in four counties of Taiwan. First, this study examined the effects of different background variables on the main variables. Moreover, this study was to analyze the differences of SOC life-management strategies, and well-being of adolescents in different levels of personality traits. Furthermore, we wanted to find out whether personality traits or SOC life-management strategies, being the predictable variable to well-being.
A total of 975 adolescents responded to a set of instruments including the Personality Trait Scales, the SOC life-management Scales, and the Well-being Scales. The descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data.
The findings of the study were summarized as follows:
1. There were significant differences found in each factor of personality traits in gender of adolescents. Concerning grade level, however, the only significant difference was found in openness.
2. Only selection was significant difference in gender of adolescents. Concerning grade, none significant difference was found in SOC life-management strategies of adolescents.
3. Only body health was significant difference in gender of adolescents. Concerning grade, however, all factors of well-being were significant differences except social anxiety.
4. Adolescents’ personality traits, SOC life-management strategies, and well-being were correlated to each other.
5. Dividing the grades of personality traits into two groups--one is above the average, another is under the average, and we found significant differences in each factor of SOC life-management strategies and well-being.
6. Adolescents’ personality traits of extraversion-agreeableness, openness, and conscientious positively predicted the use of SOC life-management strategies and the feeling of well-being, but neuroticism negatively predicted the use of SOC life-management strategies and the feeling of well-being.
7. SOC life-management strategies were significant predicators for adolescents’ feeling of well-being.
Finally, some suggestions for teaching, counseling, and future research were proposed according to the results.
