Yih-San Dai

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of paternal attachment, maternal attachment, and peer attachment to college students’ self-identity styles. A sample of 1423college students in the middle area of Taiwan completed a set of instruments assessing the three identity styles and degree of paternal attachment, maternal attachment, and peer attachment. A variety of analyses indicated that there were significant differences in college students’ paternal attachment, maternal attachment, peer attachment, and identity styles in relation to background variables. College students who engaged in an active informational- identity styles were more likely to report close emotional bonds with their fathers and peers but not mothers. In contrast, college students who established commitments from significant others through a normative-identity styles were more likely to report close emotional bonds with their fathers, mothers, and peers. College students who escaped identity formation through a diffuse-avoidance identity styles were more likely to report the least maternal attachment.
