The main purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between emotional intelligence and resilience of junior high school students on different background variables.
Participants were a total of 1,697 students, drawing from 18 junior high schools of four counties in the middle of Taiwan. Questionnaires including Background Questionaire, Emotional Intelligence Inventory and Adolescent Resilience Inventory were used . The statistical methods used to analyze the data were descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation and multiple regression analysis.
The main findings of the study were summarized as follows:
1.Significant differences were found in emotional intelligence among gender, living areas, and regular exercise habits.
2.Significant differences were found in resilience among age, family, and regular exercise habits.
3.The adolescent’s emotional intelligence was positively related to their resilience.
4.Emotional intelligence is a significant predicator and a protective factor for adolescent resilience in individual level.
Finally, based on the results, suggestions for junior high school administrations, teachers, parents and future studies were proposed.
