Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of parents’ motivation beliefs, perceptions of invitations to involvement from others, perceptions of life context variables to parent involvement in grades 7-12. A total of 11,645 students’ and their parents’ data retrieved from TEPS were analyzed by one-way MANOVA, Pearson’s product- moment correlation, canonical correlation, multiple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression.
The results of this study reveal that parents’ perceptions of invitations to involvement from others were affected by their education level, family income, and grade level of their children. Parents’ perceptions of life context variables, parents’ motivation beliefs, and parent involvement were influenced by their education level, their occupation, their gender, family income, family structure, and grade level of the children. There were positive correlations between parents’ perceptions of invitations to involvement from others and parent involvement, between parents’ perceptions of life context variables and parent involvement, between parents’ perceptions of invitations to involvement from others and parents’ motivation beliefs, between parents’ perceptions of life context variables and parents’ motivation beliefs, and between parents’ motivation beliefs and parental involvement. The effect of parents’ perceptions of invitations to involvement from others on parent involvement was mediated by parents’ motivation beliefs. The effect of parents’ perceptions of life context variables on parent involvement was mediated by parents’ motivation beliefs. Parent involvement was predicted by the parents’ background variables, parents’ perceptions of invitations to involvement from others, parents’ perceptions of life context variables, and parents’ motivation beliefs.
