Shiu Meng-Chieng (1870-1904), a patriotic poet of Lugang in Changhua County in Japanese colonial period, was born in the last part of Ch'ing Dynasty. Faced a great national humiliation, the defeat by Japan in Chia-Wu War (1894), Meng-Chieng had aroused a good deal of anti-Japanese feeling in Taiwan. When Japan occupied Taiwan, Meng-Chieng went to Bagua Mountain to fight in a war against Japanese soldier. Awakened by their defeat in this war, he organized a Poetry Society as the main thread to connect local poets. Using this Poetry Society as a vehicle for the promotion of morale, Meng-Chieng had sustained Chinese culture. The exalted principles and elegant characteristics of this patriotic poet vividly reflected on his poems of Yung Huai Poetry. The basic aim of this paper is to examine these poems. This investigation will be done by highlight and discourse the two important aspects of Meng-Chieng's poems: (1) the content of ideas; (2) the form of art presentation.
