The purpose of this study was to explore the perspectives of female principals on how to create, maintain, and use social capital in their schools. The research participants were 16 female principals serving at different levels of schools. Qualitative research methods were used, including semi-structured interviews and observation. Data were analyzed by the grounded theory techniques.
Key findings of this research included: First, the female principals interpreted the structure of social capital as four elements, including resources as products of interpersonal relationship, good interactions with others, direct and indirect network, and reciprocal benefits. Second, in the process of becoming a principal, the participants’ social capital played three roles: encouragement and support, benefits from special relations, and substantial aids. Third, the sources of the female principals’ social capital included the existent resources of their school and their personal ones. Fourth, marriage, attitudes toward relationship building, and gender had a great influence on the female principals’ access of social capital. Finally, the benefits of social capital for the female principals included encouragement and support, consultation, co-ordination and recommendation, and various forms of resources.
