The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of fathers’ parenting styles, mother’s parenting styles, inter-parenting types to seventh graders’ depressed mood. The data were retrieved from the 2001 Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS), including 6667 students and their parents. The statistical methods used to analysis the data were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, chi-square test, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis.
The results of this study revealed that seventh graders’ depressed mood level among was low. More than 30% of their fathers adopted “ high-control & high-love” parenting style and nearly 30% of the mothers adopted “low-control & high-love” parenting style, while more than half of students perceived inter-parenting inconsistency. There were significant differences in students’ perceptions of fathers’ parenting styles, mothers’ parenting styles, inter-parenting types, and depressed mood in relation to their gender and family structure. There were significant differences in students’ depressed mood in relation to their fathers’ parenting styles, mothers’ parenting styles, and inter-parenting types. The students’ background variables, father’s parenting style, mother’s parenting style, and inter-parenting types could significantly predict their depressed mood level.
