The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between peer relations and depressed mood among sophomores at senior high schools. The data targeted 9478 students and their parents in Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS) and were retrieved from its first survey result in 2001. The statistical methods used to analyze the data were descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product- moment correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression.
The results of this study indicated that the 11th graders’ peer relations were fine and the level of their depressed mood was low. Female students reported better peer relations and higher level of depressed mood than male students did. There were no significant differences in 11th graders’ peer relations and depressed mood in relation to their family structures. Peer relations correlated negatively with depressed modes among 11th graders. Gender and peer relations could predict 11th graders’ level of depressed mood.
